#8 Thirty-two years ago, our beloved friend Esther Burnham invited us to the Opera and then asked me to serve on the Board. She was a remarkable example of selflessness. To the wounded she tended, I saw her give her time and compassion. My parents had a large garden and gave all they could food wise and monetarily to those in need, and there were many. #7 I grew up during the years of rationing after World War II. #6 I have my MFA in Creative Writing with an emphasis on Poetry. I meditate each morning and stand on my head daily. #5 I have practiced Yoga since I was seventeen.
My last two cats were called, Leopold Bloom and Tsai Wa (Tibetan for forgiveness). #4 I was raised with Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and numerous cats.
I was so nervous, I could not remember the order and burst into tears. I was supposed to verbally deliver the order to the kitchen. #2 My first job was for a friend’s mother who owned a restaurant. My elementary school is 300 years old, and the local pub that was built in the 16th Century still has the original doors and ceilings. Marsh-Rebelo serves on the Opera board and will also be chairing their gala on February 23rd, 2019. Katie has won first place awards from the San Diego chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the San Diego Press Club. She also interned for the Associated Press, producing internationally circulated videos and writing articles from the White House press room. She previously worked as a print and video journalist for a daily newspaper in Johannesburg, South Africa, where she covered ongoing election violence in Zimbabwe and the resulting emigration. Katie serves on the national board of directors for the National Press Photographers Association.
She is a San Diego native and returned to cover her hometown after working as a video journalist for the Pulitzer Prize-winning Las Vegas Sun. She shot and edited in-depth features for television, radio, and the web, and reported on stories when time allowed.
